Q:  What does a datalogger do?  Why should I buy one, and why from you?
A:  A datalogger is a great tuning tool for those who love to modify cars, and those who are just trynig to squeeze every last bit of HP out of the stock components.  Mirage Automotive dataloggers allow you to see exactly what your car's computer is seeing in real time.  Not only can you view over 20 engine parameters in graphical or digital mode, you can log them for analysis at a later point in time.  A built in log review screen allows you to go over your last run, or previous lap at the track.  These dataloggers can also reset your check engine light, and see what caused it to come on.  You can also run several tests on different solenoids across the car to test for problems.

Even if you are only mildly interested in tuning, a datalogger is a must-have.  You will not realize how much time it will save you in troubleshooting problems, or how much added HP you will gain from tuning your parts to their limit.

Mirage Automotive dataloggers are far superior to the competition.  We have implemented many features such as "auto-on" circuitry.  We are also one of the two only manufacturers in the industry to sell cables with OBDI plugs.  These plug directly into your diagnostic port, just like the dealer tools!  Check out the complete specs on our cables right here.

Q:  What do I need to get started?
A:  To begin datalogging you will need the following:
-Our datalogging cable, specs available here.
-A Palm (models supported) or Laptop.  They MUST have a serial port!!!
-Our OBDI Datalogging Software (palm only), or freeware software found online.
-Serial hotsync cable if using palm.  Cradles are fine, but palms pop out easily.

Q:  What cars are these dataloggers compatible with?
A:  Our OBDI dataloggers are hardware compatible with the following cars:

-1990-1994 Mitsubishi Eclipse, Galant VR-4, Eagle Talon, and Plymouth Laser
-1990-1993 Mitsubishi 3000GT, and Dodge Stealth

-It DOES NOT support 1994-1995 3000GT and Stealth, this is coming soon

Q:  What PDA's are compatible with these cables?
A:  Our dataloggers are hardware compatible with the following PDA's:

-All Palm PDA's with OS 3.1 or greater.  Newer palm Zires and Tungstens will not
work.  You need a palm with a serial cable or cradle, USB WILL NOT work.

-All Handspring PDA's with OS 3.1 or greater.  Some newer handsprings are not
compatible (list coming soon).  You WILL NEED a serial cable for these, since
Handspring's only come with USB ports.  You WILL ALSO NEED to purchase our
special Handspring dataloggers.  These have an external power tap that must
be connected into the fuse box via a spade connector.

-Some Sony Clie's with OS 3.5 or greater work.  S360 and SJ20 have been tested
to work.  Clie NX70V, NX60, NZ90, and TG50 have bad serial ports and are not
compatible.  Once again as with the Handspring devices, you WILL NEED a special
serial hotsync cable.  We currently do not sell these at this time, but they can be
found on e-bay for around $7.

Q:  What software will work with these cables?
A:  Our dataloggers are software compatible with the following software:

-Our OBDI Datalogging Software for the palm

-Pocketlogger software (must have purchased from Pocketlogger)
-Palm 'n Stein software for the palm, available as freeware online
-TMO datalogging software for the PC (must have purchased from TMO)
-Tunerstein datalogging software for the PC, available as freeware online
-MMCD software for the palm, available as freeware online

*Many, if not all, of the freeware datalogging applications are feature limited
and have been reported to have very user un-friendly interfaces.  That is why
we reccommend purchasing our OBDI Datalogging Software for the Palm.

Q:  The datalogger will not connect, what's wrong?
A:  There are several conditions causing your datalogger not to connect:

-Is your car a 1990-1991 Talon TSI, click here
-Make sure you have your car ON, or in the "ON" key position
-Make sure the OBDI plug is securely in the diagnostic port
-Make sure the other end is connected securely to the palm/laptop
-Are you using a USB->Serial converter?  Click here
-Make sure the software is compatible with your palm/laptop version
-Try short circuiting the black and yellow wires in the OBDI plug with a paperclip.
Do this by connecting either end of the paperclip to the metal pins inside the OBDI
plug.  If your car isn't a 90-91 Talon TSI, contact us here, your
      cable could possibly be bad.
-If you are using a Handspring or Sony, make sure you have our datalogger cable
with the additional power tap from the fuse box, and make sure it is connected
-If you can still not get it to connect, please contact us here

Q:  Will the datalogger work with a USB->Serial adapter?
A:  No, all adapters tested would connect, but shortly disconnect.  They are not
supported due to their bad serial drivers.

Q:  How do I convert the cable to the opposite platform (laptop/palm)?
A:  Our dataloggers can be hardware converted to work with laptops or palms.  If you
have a laptop datalogger, you will need a:
-Male to Male DB-9 Serial Null Modem Adapter (we sell these)

If you have a Palm datalogger, you will need a:
-Female to Female DB-9 Serial Null Modem Adapter (we do not sell these)

Q:  I have a 90-91 Talon TSI and have connection problems, what's wrong?
A:  For some reason 1990-1991 Talon TSI's have bad ground wires hooked up
to their diagnostic connector.  This can cause the datalogger to act erratically when
datalogging, or trying to connect.  Sometimes it will not work at all.  To fix this
problem, the ground wire (black) on the OBDI plug needs to be shorted to the
diagnostic enable wire (yellow).  You can accomplish this with a paperclip by
sticking one end into the yellow wire pin, and one end into the black wire pin.  This
disables the "auto-on" circuitry and causes the cable to be "on" at all times.  We
are currently looking for a better solution to this problem at this time.

Q:  How does the cable work without power from the fuse panel?
A:  Our dataloggers are passively designed to use no external power source.  Other
dataloggers on the market need external power to power their serial line drivers
but we have accomplished this without needing power.

*If you have a Handspring or Sony Clie, you will need our externally powered cable
to power their internal line drivers.  Handspring and Sony decided to leave these
out of the PDA to conserve power.  If you have a Palm it will work fine without.

Q:  My ABS light still comes on, what is the problem?
A:  Usually the light will defeat the "auto-on" circuitry if the following procedure is not
     followed:

-With the car off plug in your datalogger cable (or leave it plugged in)
-Turn the car on, or put the key into the "ON" position
-If you are using a laptop, you can connect it now to the datalogging cable
-If you are using a palm, you can connect it before the car is on
-Turn your palm or laptop ON once the car is on
-Your ABS light should be OFF at this point
-Try and connect now to the car, your ABS light should stay off
-If you are still having problems, please contact us here

Q:  Will these dataloggers work on a PDA cell phone?
A:  Although PDA cell phones are NOT supported, some have been reported to work.
From information provided by an end user, the newest cell phone line with the
serial cable was capable of datalogging the car.  We have not personally tested
our product on any cell phones, and most likely will not in the future.
